Gut Microbiome & Weight Management

Our gut microbiome helps to maintain energy, fat storage, appetite and cravings, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation. Some gut bacteria are more efficient at extracting energy from food. An imbalance—such as a higher ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes—has been associated with obesity. These bacteria may promote fat storage by:

  • Increasing calorie absorption

  • Triggering fat storage signals through short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).

Gut bacteria influence hinger and satiety hormones like Ghrelin (hunger hormone) and Leptin (satiety hormone). These bacteria may also impact dopamine pathways, increasing cravings for sugar and fat. An unhealthy gut microbiome is associated with insuline resistance and low-grade chronic inflammation, both are major contributors to weight gain and metabolic syndrome.

Dietary Fiber & Short Chain Fatty Acids

Microbes ferment dietary fibers to produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, proprionate, and acetate. These enzymes help to:

  • Regulate Fat Metabolism

  • Improve Insulin Sensitivity

  • Reduce Inflammation.

Brain Gut Connection.png

Gut-Brain Axis & Mental Health

It's all connected! The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication system involving:

  • The vagus nerve

  • Immune System

Microbial metabolites influence production of  neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, etc) and short chain fatty acids

Gut bacteria influence mood, cognition, and stress responses by producing and  influencing:

  • Serotonin (up to 90% is made in the gut !)

  • Dopamine

  • GABA

Gut Imbalance/Dysbiosis has been linked to:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Brain Fog

  • Neuroinflammation
